Chameleon Scratch Art

 Chameleon Scratch Art

Description: We started this lesson talking about some famous scratch artists. We got an opportunity to see some of their work. We then talked about a book called, "The Mixed-Up Chameleon." We were encouraged to individualize our art and make it personal to our own liking. We started by naming all the colors of the rainbow and putting them on a sheet of paper using oil pastels. We then covered our oil pastels in black paint. While we waited for it to dry, we drew a chameleon onto a sheet of paper with different patterns and designs in it. We then traced our chameleon with a pencil onto a pre-made sheet of scratch paper and used our sticks to create scratch art. This was good practice for our actual projects. Once our paint dried on the oil pastels, we traced our same chameleon onto the sheet. We used our sticks to trace around the chameleon. This was a little more difficult than using the pre-made scratch piece as some spots had too much paint in them.

Extension: An extension for this activity could be to have students create their own animals after they understand how to make scratch art. They could choose their own animal and then write a few sentences on why they chose that one.
